America’s 20 Best Lobster Rolls Outside of Maine

Excerpted from June 28, 213 article by Dan Meyers, Editor for The Daily Meal

The lobster roll at the Bay Area’s renowned Sam’s Chowder House is gorgeous to look at, as is the view out over the Pacific.

It’s widely accepted that most of the best lobster rolls in America can be found in Maine. Why? There’s no shortage of lobster there, for one, and there’s something about the sea breeze, the salty air, and the even saltier fishermen who you’ll find at the best lobster shacks that make a Maine lobster roll not just an amazing sandwich, but a life-affirming experience. Thankfully, that experience isn’t exclusive to Maine, and elsewhere in the country there are not only incredible lobster rolls to be eaten on patios overlooking the water, but at fine restaurants as well.

If there’s such thing as a perfect food, a great lobster roll could very well be it. First of all, it’s lobster, one of the most gourmet — and delicious — foods in existence, democratized in a sense by removing it from the shell and sticking it inside a bun. The best lobster rolls are ones that boast heaping helpings of super-fresh lobster, kept in large chunks, served warm or cool, moistened with a little bit of mayo or butter, accented with some salt, pepper, and other spices of the chef’s choosing (or none at all, but as long as the lobster isn’t overpowered there’s certainly room for creativity), nestled inside (and on top of and around) a split-top bun that’s been buttered and toasted on a griddle. Aside from the sandwich itself, the eating experience is about as decadent as possible, and there are few foods that represent summer quite as much as a lobster roll. What’s more, there are two major lobster roll styles to choose from, and both are arguably equally delicious: Maine-style, which is served cold with mayo, and Connecticut-style, which is served warm with butter.

In order to find the best lobster rolls outside of Maine, we searched far and wide for those that have the highest level of renown, but also ones that meet all the qualifications set forth above. While obviously the opportunity to eat your lobster roll on a picturesque dock overlooking a harbor filled with lobster trawlers is ideal, that’s not a make-or-break criterion for a great lobster roll. Some mediocre lobster rolls are served in the most picturesque settings imaginable, and likewise, some of the country’s best lobster rolls are served at restaurants with no water in sight.

Our journey across Lobster Roll America takes us to a restaurant in Los Angeles that serves a green curry-spiked lobster roll in a jet-black bun, an oyster bar in Philadelphia that ships both lobster and buns in from Maine daily, a shack in Minneapolis that goes through 3,000 pounds of lobster per week, and a sprawling patio in Austin, Texas, where super-fresh lobster rolls are served with a side of drawn butter. Not included in our list, unfortunately, is a study in opulence at New York’s Manon, a lobster roll topped with uni and caviar, because it’s not (yet) officially on the menu.

Sam’s Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, Calif.

The lobster rolls served at Sam’s hit all the right notes: First, they’re gorgeous to look at, with massive chunks of super-fresh lobster dressed with just a little bit of drawn butter, fresh herbs, and celery, and tucked into a custom-baked bun. Second, the view from the deck out across the Pacific is second to none. Third, it’s about as New England an experience as you can get, but 3,000 miles away. With a menu that’s brimming with local seafood as well as specialties like cioppino, bacon-wrapped crabmeat-stuffed prawns, and a grilled rib-eye, it’s not just one of the best lobster rolls in the Bay Area, it’s one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area.

10 Green Restaurants that Care About Our Earth

Excerpted from April 2013 post by Jennifer Wood for Relish

Going green. It’s an admirable endeavor—though sometimes easier said than done. Particularly if you’re the proprietor of a busy restaurant, tasked with serving hundreds of patrons each and every day. But eco-consciousness is more than just a PR ploy for many restaurateurs. Just in time for Earth Day, we spoke with the eco-conscious masterminds behind 10 Green Restaurants That Care About Our Earth to get to the bottom of their commendable commitment to the planet.

Sam’s Chowder House

Location: Half Moon Bay, CA
Website: Sam’s Chowder House
If the amazing waterfront locale and acclaimed menu of fresh seafood weren’t enough to entice you to Sam’s Chowder House, how about the fact that the restaurant’s owners go out of their way to ensure they’re operating at the highest levels of eco-consciousness? “At Sam’s, we try to meet the needs of our guests today, but not compromise the environment for future generations, so we use rooftop solar electricity, biodegradable and compostable packaging, sustainable seafood practices and we even recycle the rice-based vegetable oil from our fryers (about 300 gallons a week),” says co-owner Julie Shenkman.

At-Home Tip: “Here are five simple, doable tips from our Executive Chef and Partner Lewis Rossman on how you can reduce your carbon footprint at home,” offers Shenkman: “Buy organic and local whenever possible—check out your local farmer’s market; buy products with the least amount of packaging possible, and with packaging that is compostable and recyclable; even better—grow your own food! Start with a small, portable herb garden; try and choose wild seafood whenever possible, and use the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s watch list to help guide your choices (they also publish a great consumer guide); replace plastic containers with glass.”

Dinner at Marzano, Atelier Crenn, Super Duper, Hog & Rocks and Sam’s Chowder House

Excerpt from July 16, 2012 article by Michael Bauer for Inside Scoop SF

Friday: Sam’s Chowder House

Few restaurants have the close up ocean views as this Half Moon Bay restaurant that features a wide-ranging menu, from hamburgers and spaghetti and meatballs to paella, cioppino and fried shrimp.

Seafood should be first on the list here. Two items stand out on chef Lewis Rossman’s menu: the New England clam chowder ($6.95/$10.25) where the clams, cream and Yukon gold potatoes are enhanced with smoked bacon; and the lobster roll ($21.95) with chunks of seafood tossed with butter and served on a torpedo roll with sides of cold slaw and chips.

You also can’t go wrong with the daily catch, often a grilled fish such as swordfish ($25.50) with potato cakes and Italian chard.

OpenTable: Chef Lewis Rossman shares his recipe for Grandma’s Meatballs

From Mom with Love: Executive Chef Lewis Rossman of Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, California, Shares the Recipe for Grandma Flora’s Meatballs

May 11, 2012 OpenTable article

Mother’s Day is almost here, and we’ve got even more chefs to share a recipe inspired by their own mom. Lewis Rossman, Executive Chef of Sam’s Chowder House, reveals his grandma’s recipe for amazing meatballs!

Long before meatballs claimed the culinary spotlight, they’ve been a mainstay on the menu for Chef Lewis Rossman and his family, both at home and at his restaurant, Sam’s Chowder House. Rossman says, “My mother, who taught me how to make her mother’s recipe for meatballs, is Italian, and traditional Italian cuisine has always been a big part of my life and what I grew up on. We spent many a Christmas together cooking classic Italian food, such as fried artichokes, sausage and meatballs, braciole, ravioli, and so on.”

Growing up near Philadelphia, Rossman and his family frequented South Philly restaurants, but everyday dinners at home found Rossman’s mom behind the stove, making grilled meats, escarole, chicken noodle soup finished with egg, frittatas, and, of course, spaghetti and meatballs.

He says, “I serve this in the restaurant as an appetizer dish in which the meatballs are baked in individual casserole dishes and served with classic crusty Italian bread, as well as serving spaghetti and meatballs. At home, I often serve similar style meatball dishes to my family and friends — but it’s almost never exactly the same dish!”

Grandma Flora's Savory Meatballs appetizer at Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, California

“This dish is all about heart,” says Chef Rossman. “It’s one of those dishes where you can really taste the love that went into the process of making it.”

Grandma Flora’s Savory Meatballs
Makes about 20 2-oz. meatballs

Ingredients:
1 lb. ground chuck
1 lb. ground pork butt
1/2 cup ricotta cheese
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 whole eggs
1/2 cup toasted bread crumbs
1 tablespoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all of the ingredients together until thoroughly incorporated and portion into 2 ounce balls.

Sauce:
1 med. white onion small dice
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 cup white wine
2 cups diced tomatoes and juice (fresh or canned)
2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup chicken stock or water
3 sprigs of fresh oregano
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
To start the sauce to cook the meatballs, heat an ample amount of olive oil in a braising pot and brown the meatballs. It is important that the oil is hot to prevent sticking. When the oil reaches its smoking point it is time to lower the heat to medium and add the meatballs. Brown the meatballs evenly on all sides. Once the meatballs are browned, remove from the pot to a separate container. If there is an excess of grease in the pot pour the grease off into a metal container and cool before discarding.

Next add the onion and garlic to the pot and cook on medium heat. Sauté these ingredients until softened, if necessary add a little more olive oil. Now add 1 cup of white wine and be sure to scrape all the brown bits from the meatballs off the bottom of the pan (These are good!). When the wine has reduced by half add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and stock or water. Add the fresh oregano and season with salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and add the meatballs back in. Cook the meatballs in the sauce for 20 minutes at a low simmer.

Enjoy!

Real Weddings Mini-Moon

By Aimee Carroll on January 17, 2011 for Real Weddings Magazine

My husband and I have always been beach lovers. Rain, shine, wind or cold, we’d rather be at the beach than anywhere else (you should have seen us on our honeymoon, lying on a Caribbean beach in the pouring rain)!

Being Sacramento residents, we’ve always thought that we had to drive to Southern California to enjoy the beach — that is, until we recently discovered Half Moon Bay.

Just 25 miles past San Francisco and you’re there! Half Moon Bay has it all from world-class surfing (have you heard of the Big Kahunas at Maverick’s?), fine dining, luxurious accommodations, a plethora of outdoor activities and a charming historic downtown to complete the “beach-town” vibe.

Recommended Resort: Beach House Hotel, Half Moon Bay. Let me start this off by saying, “We love, love, love this hotel!” The Beach House Hotel has thought of everything when it comes to making their guests feel right at home.

With amenities like free WiFi, complimentary bottled waters, a fully stocked kitchenette, a wood-burning fireplace, comfy goose-down comforters and (my personal favorite) Aveda bath products, it was hard to leave.

The Beach House Hotel also offers a variety of complimentary perks (yes, that means gift with purchase!), including: a wine and cheese reception on Friday and Saturday evenings, continental breakfast, heated outdoor pool and spa overlooking the ocean, and did I mention the complimentary Internet access?!

Our room had the most breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Pillar Point Harbor. With a private deck right above the beach, we really didn’t have any reason to leave. We got to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean from our patio — all with the comforts of our hotel suite just a couple steps away.

Check In: Beach House Hotel. 4100 North Cabrillo Highway in Half Moon Bay. 800-315-9366, beach-house.com.

Check Out: The couples’ massage at the Beach House Spa. Join your honey for a little side-by-side rest and relaxation. If you’re looking for a more active way to clear your mind, the spa also offers private yoga sessions in the privacy of your own room! How cool is that?

Don’t Miss: Sam’s Chowder House. Just a short walk from The Beach House Hotel along a paved beach front path and you’ve arrived at a critically acclaimed restaurant offering fresh, local seafood cuisine.

Sam’s Chowder House is a complete dining experience. Not only is the food delicious, but the views are spectacular, the service is outstanding and the live music (on Friday and Saturday nights) creates a fun, upbeat atmosphere.

We’re definitely coming back to enjoy the dog-friendly outdoor patio. I’m looking forward to pulling up an Adirondack chair, sitting by the fire pit with a cocktail and enjoying the ocean views. The coolest part about this is that we can check out the weather before we head over. Sam’s Chowder House offers a live “SamCam” on their Web site, samschowderhouse.com.

On a side note, not only are the Beach House Hotel and Sam’s Chowder House great mini-moon destinations, they both offer really cool wedding and reception facilities as well. If you’re looking for a Northern California, beach front wedding location, be sure to check these places out!

The Today Show on NBC News - Phil Lempert, TODAY Food Editor names Sam's Lobster Roll in top 5 sandwiches

Today Show's Phil Lewis interviews Executive Chef Lewis Rossman outside at Sam's Chowder House about their famous Lobster Roll Sandwich

Phil Lempert on if the New England classic has West Coast competition

The idea of Sam’s lobster roll being THE sandwich sensation in Half Moon Bay, 20 minutes south of San Francisco, sounded a bit like a stretch. After all, I’ve tasted, and enjoyed, lobster rolls from Maine to the famous Lobster Roll (along the stretch of the highway between Amagansett and Montauk on Long Island). But I was pleasantly surprised.

  • Top Five Sandwiches in America award by NBC's The Today Show - The perfect setting for a delightful seafood eating experience...the lobster roll at Sam's Chowder House is different... if you like lobster, there is no question that you will LOVE this sandwich. • NBC News video - Best Sandwich: California lobster roll - TODAY Food Editor Phil Lempert on what makes this classic from Sam's Chowder House so tasty and delicious

    news-Today-Show-Best-Sandwich-2

The lobster roll at Sam’s Chowder House is different. It’s typical to have loads of mayo or another similar type of dressing surrounding mini nuggets of lobster on a toasted hot dog bun … but here in Half Moon Bay there is no mayo. There’s specially baked bread (which is then cut into hot-dog-bun rolls) and a delicate blend of herbs and diced celery. The lobster is lightly dressed with melted butter and in huge tender pieces. All in all, if you like lobster, there is no question that you will LOVE this sandwich.

Since Sam’s is right on the bay, with sailboats, foghorns and seagulls, you have the perfect setting for a delightful seafood eating experience. In fact, you might think that you were actually on the Northern shore of Maine, where fisherman will be dragging their daily catch from their boats to shore — but then the breathtaking West Coast sunset reminds you that you’re some three thousand miles away. Not only might Sam’s lobster roll be the Best Sandwich in America, but it also might make those New Englanders a bit jealous!
